Learn how to crochet the Suzette stitch step-by-step with this easy beginner’s guide. Includes photos, video and clear instructions for first-time crocheters! This stitch is beautiful and elegant while also being a fairly easy stitch to learn.
Each of my stitch tutorials has instructions for making a square. Once I finish this series of “How to Crochet…” I will show you guys how to put it together, and we will make a throw blanket using all the stitches we learned how to crochet!
This stitch in particular is one I hold very close to my heart. A little over two years ago I made a sample batch of stitches, and this was in the batch. After a lot of contemplation, I decided to use this stitch to crochet my wedding dress. It was a close call with the lemon peel stitch, but ultimately I decided on this one. It will always be one of my favorite stitches.

What you’ll need to make this square:
- Weight 4 acrylic yarn (I use ‘I love this yarn’ from hobby lobby)
- 6mm crochet hook (this is the set I use https://amzn.to/3uNYwBm )
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
- Tape measure
Pattern for those who already know the stitch:
R1 – Ch 22, sc in the 2nd ch from your hook, dc in the same ch, sk a ch, sc and then dc in the same st. Continue doing this down your ch until the last two chains, you’ll sk the first and sc in the next. Don’t put a dc as this will cause an increase. (21)
R2 – Ch 1 and turn, *sc and dc in the first st and sk the next.* Repeat ** until the end of your row, you’ll end with a sc. (21)
R3-R17 – Continue repeating row 2 until you have 17 rows.
Congrats on finishing your square, I can’t wait to see you in the next tutorial!

Step-by-Step Tutorial
Now for my beginners! Let’s get started!

You’ll start by chaining 22 chains.

R1 – Once you have your chain of 22, find the second chain from your hook (the loop on your hook doesn’t count as a chain) place a single crochet stitch in the second chain from your hook. Place a double crochet in the same chain.
If you need a refresher on how to do a single crochet or a double crochet, I’ll link them here below:
- Single Crochet Tutorial – https://www.sassystitchescrochet.com/single-crochet-part-1/
- Double Crochet Tutorial – https://www.sassystitchescrochet.com/how-to-crochet-a-double-crochet-stitch-beginners-step-by-step-guide/

Skip a chain space and single crochet in the next, double crochet in the same chain as the single crochet. Continue repeating until the last two chains.
In the last two chains, you will skip the one closest to you and single crochet in the last chain. You should end with 21 stitches.

R2 – Chain 1 and turn your project, place a single crochet and double crochet in the first stitch, *skip a stitch and place a single crochet and double crochet in the next stitch.* Keep repeating until you get to your last two stitches. Skip one and single crochet in the last. (21)
Keep repeating row 2 until you have a total of 17 rows.

I hope you enjoyed today’s tutorial! I hope to see you in the next one.
