Learn how to crochet the Moss stitch with this easy beginner’s guide. Includes photos and clear instructions for first-time crocheters!

I love this stitch so much! I remember when I first learned it I made a baby blanket and to this day it’s still my favorite blanket. You can see what it looked like from the image below. This stitch is beautiful and very easy to do. With that being said, lets get to it!

Let’s get started! ~

What you’ll need :

  • Weight 4 acrylic yarn (I use ‘I love this yarn’ from hobby lobby)
  • 6mm crochet hook (this is the set I use https://amzn.to/3uNYwBm )
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle
  • Tape measure

For those of you who already know how to do this stitch but want to make this square –

Ch 26

Row 1 – Sc in the 4th ch from your hook, *ch 1, sk 1, sc in next* Keep repeating ** until the end.

Row 2 – Ch 2, Sk the first sc, sc in the ch space. Ch 1 over your sc and sc in ch space.

Repeat row 2 until you have 25 rows.

Now for my beginners!

If you prefer to follow a video tutorial, you can find one on my YouTube page!

Attach your yarn to your hook whether that be with a slip knot or a double knot. Chain 26.

In the fourth chain from your hook, place a single crochet. (If you need a refresher on single crochet check out this blog post Single Crochet || Part 1 || – Sassy Stitches Crochet (wordpress.com) )

Chain 1 and skip a chain, in the next chain place a single crochet.

Continue doing that until you have no chains left.

Chain 2 and turn, look for the gap between your single crochets. It should be your second stitch. Place a single crochet in that gap.

Chain one and skip over your single crochet from previous row. Single crochet in the gap. (your chain space)

Continue repeating the second row until you have a total of 25 rows. That should measure out to 6 1/4 x 6 1/4.

Have a great day and I’ll see you on the next one!
